great Northern win-

TER MEETING

GLADFUL WINS THE HURDLES

RED RIBBON THE CORNWALL

handicap

By lelegrapli Special Correspondent, ~.. , Auckland, Juno 3. Alter a week of wet weather the sun shone out brightly ixxlay, and the Auckland Racing Uub's Winter Meet\ng opened most auspiciously. The going was, of course, very heavy. In spite of tile fact unit no special race trains were run, there was a large attendance. Tho Tramway Company did its best to copo with.tlie traffic, and full use was made of other vehicles of every description. The inconvenience caused by the very limited train service did not prove nearly so serious as was expected. Tho Great Northern Hurdle Race proved a, very interesting contest, the winner being well concealed until the last hurdle. Waiuiai, Tararu Jack, Te Onga, Marconi, Sir Solo, Fisher, and Cast Iron were all well backed. Fisher and Guiding Way were the first to show in front. Cast Iron being the last. Tiraru Jack and Fisher made the running for nearly two miles, with Gladful and St. Elmn. lying handy. At the final hur.de Fisher and Tararu Jack, both of whom seemed, to lie tiring, came down, and St, Elmn then took the, lead. Gladful came after him with a great dash and secured the verdiot by about a head. Marconi pulled up after going about a mile, and Sir Solo ran disappointingly. To Onga was travelling very fast at the finish. The scratching of Bisogne, who is suffering from a rather bad bump, and, Colonel Soult. considerably lessened tho interest in the Cornwall Handicap. Tho public favourites were Toa Tere, Hopfield, Lady Penury, Red Ribbon, anil Uncle Ned. From ft good start, Housewife shot to the front, with Uncle Ned close at hand. About half a milo from home Red Ribbon began to inovo up, and on entering the straight had everything beaten. El Gallo ran a good race and finished third. The rider of Czaronus was cautioned, for his handling of his mount in the Maiden Steeplechase. Carmont, the rider of Housewife, was cautioned for crossing the field in the Cornwall Handicap. Then totali&ator handled .£41,804, as against J245,178 10s. the previous year, a defieafie of .£3374 10s. THE RESULTS. By Telegraph.—Press Association.
