LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

MORE CARE NEEDED AT MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS. Sir,—l will bo much obliged if you will insert in Tub Dominion the necessary parts of this letter, so that this matter will )je pointed out to the military authorities. Last Friday. I was ordered with other balloted men to Palmeraton to be examined before the medical officers. Oil entering the hall we were ordered to strip all but trousers and coat, and sit along the wall of the hall ami await our turn. It was a bitterly cold morning, and the large empty hall had a door open at each end and an open door at either side. I had to sit in this draughty place H hours, and those after mo had to sit longer. While sitting there several of us complained to the military policy who were pacing the floor of the cold, but no notice was taken of us. That night, when I retired to ) bed, I could not sleep a winlc from a tightness of the chest, and the same thing lias happened every night since. On Tuesday I saw a doctor, and he told mo I had "shingles," which he stated I got in all probability from sitting in.a draught. I I immediately started taking medicine, etc., but have made no progress; on tiio con- ! trary, I have got steadily worse. To-day II again consulted the doctor, and he or- | dered me to go to a hospital immediately, as the shingles have nearly met round my ! chest, which, I understand, means death ■if they do meet. Hoping this letter will be the means of some abler pen than mine taking the matter up, and inducing the Medical Board to take more care in future,—l am, etc.,' BALLOTED MAN. -
