THE BIRTHDAY HONOURS
The birthday honours;, bo far as I they affect New Zealand, announced I to-clay are modest enough both in ! their nature and number. All havo been well earned, and will bo generally recogniscd as tho outcome of valued public scrvice. It will be a disappointment to many that the Government has again failed to adequately bring under the notico of the Home authorities tho very great services of tho Mayor of Wellington, Me. J. P. Lukb. On previous occasions when lists of honours have been published there "have been comments over tho omis--sion of Mk. Luke's-namo from tho list, and though it appears on the present list, it is associated with a moro modest recognition of his lifelong services in public offices, and especially his services in connection with the waT, than was generally anticipated.
