THE BIRTHDAY HONOURS
The birthday honours, so far as they affect New Zealand, announced to-clay are modest enough both in _ their nature and number. _ All have been- well earned, and will bo generally recognised as the outcome of valued public service. It will bo a disappointment to many that the Government has again failed to adequately bring under the notice of the Home authorities ' the very great services of the Mayor of Wellington, Me. J. .P. Luke. On previous occasions when lists of honours have been published there liavc been comments over tho omission of Mr. Luke's name from tho list, and though it appears on the •present list, it is associated with a more modest recognition of his lifelong services in public offices, a,nd especially his services in connection with the war, than was generally anticipated.
