Irvine, local manager of the Union Steam Ship Co., In supporting an appeal for exemption of a steward, said that ■stewards were very scarce, and at the present time the shortage which had become so acute was made evident by complaints of steamer passengers ae to the efficiency of tho stewards ii'msiring. The board suggested that perhaps the remedy was the employment of ■ stewardesses. "This," said Mr. Irvine, "has been talked about, but nothing has been done." Eβ remarked that some Scandinavian steamship lines had done this. With regard to the case under review, however, etowardesses would hardly bo suitable in cargo, steamers, where the stewards had chiefly to look after the crews. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. J. A. Munro, of the Marine Depart inent, has been granted three months' special leave. Mr. L. R. Roberts,- wireless operator of the Mararoa. has come ashore, and has been replaced by Mr. E. O. Morris. Mr. H. W. Towneend, third officer of tho Mnraroa, has come ashore. Mr. L. M. Smith, assistant purser of the Mapourika, lias signed off tho vessel's articles.
The fleet of sailing' craft registered in Auckland and trading in and out or the port is to be augmented by what -will be the largest vessel ou the register. The newcomer is the AirericftTi four-masted tmhooner ljyma.ll D. Foster, which has been bought by Mr. G. Nicol, of Auckland, from tue Fijian Government.'. No work will bo done ou the Kaitoa, on Monday, as the vessel is not going back to Nelson as usual tliot day, but will remain hero, and after discharging her cargo on Tuesday, will go on the slip for cleaning and painting. It is expected that the Kflitoa. will bn ready to resume running in her ordinary time-table on Wednesday. Today the Kahlkn, is to leave for Orcymoutli, where she will load for Wellington. No word lias yet been received by Messrs. Bnniiatyne and Co. about the Defender, ft in not thought that slie has got out of Tfokitika yet. Both the Echo mid the Koutniiui are dun to-morrow from Napier. 'lUifi Echo will lond a cargo of ii.il book to Nnpipr, <ind the Koutumii will proceed to the East Coast. Tlntb vessels will probably get away on Tuesday. After a. delay of four days owing to alterations not being completed and bad weather the Ifuin got away last, night for Wangauui.
