A FARMER'S MILITARY APPEAL
HOW Hβ SOUGHT A MANAGER/-. By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent. ! ~ ~ Masterton, Juno 1. At tho sitting of tho Military' Borneo Board r at Masterton to-day Christopher .Burton, farm manager, Kaiparoro,' appealed on grounds , of hardship and public interest.; Appellant's father also appealed .on his'son's behalf. Burton said lie hswl -worked up a good.-dairy herd. 'Ho; did no milking himself, this being done by a .married couple. He also had sheep. Ho did all the ploughing, dipping, fencing, etc. Captain Culvert: When you applied for, .■a manager how many applications did jou receive?—" Thirty." ...-. 'And you could not fix up with one?— ;'No. - I wrote to moet of them,-asking them to name what ealary they, wanted, but camo to no arrangement." ' . You fsay when you submitted .conditions, of the position the applicants all ■dropped off.—"Yes.-" ' . The chairman remarked that it was possible to make conditions so that applicants -would be sure to drop off. • The chairman (to appellant): Did you effer any fixed wages?—" No. X-wanted them to state how much they wanted." Tho .chairman: That's an. old trick. Bweatere do that. , ' . You sliould have offered a certain sum. ,Let me see.the conditions you were imposing? The chairman (after reading tho conditions): These conditions aro very harassing indeed, and it is no wonder you did not succeed in filling the position. ■ The elairman then read over tho conHitions, which were most exacting, two items being that the applicant must bo a non-smoker and a total abstainer, and if married -must have no children. "This is another very saintly- requirement," remarked tho chairman. , "Does he mean no children in the past or iu the future?" interjected Mr. Bainber. (Laughter.) Captain Calvert: And you really; ex-' fleeted to'get a man oil these conditions? >~"Yee." : Then you must be a very hopeful jnan. Appellant: I havo seen men. who could Comply with tho conditions. The chairman remarked that the board trere not surprised appellant did not get & man after reading the conditions. Mr. Burton, sen., gave evidence on behalf of his eon. The chairman: Couldn't you, during •war time, have offered a. good salary for a man to replace your son? You aro imposing very exacting conditions. You ■svantainanwho must be a non-smoker, a total abstainer, and if ho ]ins_ a wife fiho must liave no children. Yon seem to want all the good things, and mako no sacrifices. Witness replied that if lie had to sell 'the place he would lose everything. The chairman remarked that there was ■no necessity to sell the place. The fact that Burton, sen., had advertised for a. man to.replace his son showed that the son was not indispensable. The appeal was dismissed.
