Through strces of weather the schooner Hauto put into Wellington aulto unexpectedly yesterday, and took up an anchorage in the stream. Tho Hauto left Onehunga last Friday with, a full cargo of timber for Dunedin, at. which southern port she was to lay up to have new auxiliary engines installed. Provided that bad weather was tho only cause of the vessel putting in, she will not berth, but will leave as soon as the weather permits. Her last apeparaneo here was about a year ago, when Captain Anderson, now of the Huanui, was in charge. NO OAKGO. The Union Company advifc that owing to Monday being a holiday on the waterfronts throughout tho Dominion, no cargo Trill be received by the Mftraroa on Saturday, or Hie Maori or Mapourika,on Monday, as any cargo received could not be worked.

NEW YORK RETORT. Maillcr <md Qucroan. of New York, writing on May 3, state :-Shippiuir matters aro still in a very unsatisfactory way. The action of tho Rritish Government in suppressing all nowa in regard to shipping has been followed by a similar request from tho United Slaten authorities, and tho movements of steamers aro almost irapossihlo to ascertain, as to when thoy are likely to arrive at this port for loading, or wJion dispatches* will tako place. All of t.hiß is with n. view to prevent losses by submarines, and, as shipper!), we must submit to tho .conditions existing here, and our friendw in Australia will undoubtedly rcaliFo why it is impossiblo to givo moro definite information. With tho greatly increased demand for tonnage and tho very limited amount that is available, charter cost of steamers has continued U) advance, and is now at tho highest point ever known. Anything of a aultablo nature is quickly takon up and owners aro not disposed to accept long voyajo business unless at very full rales. A3 a result, of this constant ndvanco'in charter cost, freight rates have already Increased, 50 per cent, for Australia and New Zealand, with probability that they will go still lusher. Those now ruling arc much Jceu than rates to South Africa, and no higher than those to South America, so that for Australia and Now Zealand tho present basis i» not above or even up to tho rates ruling to other countries.
MESS TABLE GOSSIP. Yralerda.y tb» Huia reoommi6sioncd. Captain W. Deiloy, lato of tho Wairau and Himltajigi, took charge, and Mr. fl.Thomas joined n.3 mate, and Mr. James Brown za ongiueer. Mr. R. V. Dickey, who lately left tho Palccno., on which vessel ho occupied tho position of purser, is at present awaiting instructions at Dfl.ncd.in. Mr. R. E. Huxtablo will shortly join tho M'apourika as assistant pursor. He is late of tho Union Company's Launecslon office.
The departure! of ilio John for '.Hmaru, Os'marii. and Dtuicdin haß been postponed until to-day. The, vessel receives cargo | t-UI 2 p.m. for those ports. According to Isolates!, advieo, tho Ha.wora and Warerley aro both sheltering in Wauganui. At 3.15 p.m. yoirterday M was reported to-the Harbourmaster that tho sea was gctling- very rough outside the Heads, and wan brcalring all ovor tho entrance. Lata this afternoon tho Gorinna is expected from southern ports, and her (\pparturo has now been postponed until tomorrow. Sho irill receiTe cargo till 10.30 a.m. to-morrow for Now Plymouth. Instead of laying np for overhaul on arrival at Blenheim yesterday tho Opawa was filed to load another cargo at Blenheim. She -will arrive to-day, and leave this evening for Blenheim, where she will probably withdraw. . To-day or to-morrow the Hincmoa wduo back from her trip round tho Oook Strait lighthouses. On arrival she will lay.up to undergo overhaul. Owing to tho curtailment of tho Northern Company's winter time-table, tho Ngatlawa, has been taken off tho running, and will bo laid up indefinitely.
