VICTORIA LEAGUE ANNUAL MEETING
RECORD OF PATRIOTIC ATORK. The annual meeting of the Victoria League was held in tho Esperanto Rooms, Lambton Quay, yesterday afternoon. Miss Coates (president) occupied the chair, and among those present were Her Excellency tho Countess of Liverpool, also Mrs. Ilanan (wife of the Minister of Education), and the Mavoress (Mrs. J. P. Luke).
Tho annual report of- the league presented by the secretary. Mm. Chatficld, stated that during tho year thero had been more social work, especially in the way of sending members to the league ! in London. The work of Bonding medical comforts and hospital clothing by the transports had been steadily continued, the cases now numbering' 160. At tie request of the British Red Cross Society, four delegates, Miss Coates, Mrs. E. Tfadfield, Mrs. Corliss, and Mrs. Ranking Brown, attended a meeting of twentyeight representatives of difforent Moieties to make arrangonionfcs for a special colleoting day in aid of the Red Cross, also with regard to the establishment of j n Red Cross shop. Tho leaguo gave all I assistance in its power on Red Cross Day, and Miss Coates was appointed as the leaguo representative on tho permanent Red Cross Shop Committee. It was agreed to take the.Red Cross Shop onco in three months, and the first day was very successful; tho sum of <£53 10s. being handed over to Mrs. Firth, tho shop secretary. The second day takings totalled .£'B3. The 6ub-committeo appointed to arrange the league day consisted of the president and tho secretary (ex-officio), and Mesdames E. E. Muir, Swanston, West, Von Hoast, Larnach, Lever, Campboll, and Miss M'Caw. Mrs. Von Haast agreed to establish a sewing party at her house, and Mrs. Larnach and Mrs. Lever also assisted. . .A circular resolution was sent to all tho .leagues throughout the Empire to bo read at a public meeting on the second anniversary of tho declaration of war. The league has bcon represented on tbo Camp Entertainment Committee, which has given about two hundred entertainments at Trentham, during the year—an average of four each week, of which the Victoria Leaguo lias usually contributed two each month, and ;£32 towards the fund. The concert party, in addition to this, has given concerts at the Taumaru Military Hospital, Lowry Bay; the Victoria Military Hospital, and one at the Concert Chamber, which realised .EGO 13s. The committee thanks all frionds and helpers. Thanks are duo to' tho concert party for thoir contribution to the funds, and to the officers, council, and executivo committee. It would be a great advantago to the league if tho membership could be extended, and if many of those who are members would attend meetings and take a warmer interest in the work done. The general balance-sheet, as read by Mrs. J. D. Gray, in place of the treasurer (Mrs. Rankine Brown), showed receipts' amounting to ,£B2 25., and expenses .£67''is. 2d.,, leaving a balance in hand of Mi 17s. lOd. The Medical Comforts balance-sheet (separate from the general one) showed a balance (per Miss Coates) of ,037 10s. lid. from June 1, 1010. Bank deposits amounted to <£175 Is.; expenditure, £WB ss. 9(1; leaving a balance of <El 6 12s. 2d. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, Mr. C. R. Smith complimented the leaguo upoir the excellent record of work accomplished during tho year, and said that tho.work of such an orgjinisatidn as this, with branches in so many countries of the world, did much to bind tu> 'Empire together. Be also spoke of lhe great pleasure it was to sec Miss .Coates presiding at the meeting. For.many years she bad-associ-ated herself with its activities,, and had done a very fino work. Reference to tho possible resignation of Mrs. Chatfield from tho league was made, and Mr. Smith hoped that she would not allow herself to resign. It was tho duly of
everyone to "carry on" just now. Indeed, it wa« the watchword of the Empire, and although she had many duties to perforin, lie hoped that she would still occupy the position of secretary. Mr. Darroch seconded the motion, and referred to the work which had been done for the league by Miss Coates, and also by Mrs. Cnatfield. Tho work of supplying the men at the front with comforts was very valuable, and brought relief to many. He strongly advised everyone when sending parcels to bo sure and put in them something to eat.' Such gifts were often a godsend to weary, cold, and hungry men. Hiss Coates thanked Mr. Smith and Mr. Darroch for their' kind remarks, and i-'poke of the great assistance she had received in tho work of sending medical comforts to tho men from tho Licensed Victuallers. They had giveV eases of brandy, and also supplies 6( groceries. AVithout their'great help the work could not have been carried out. Sho hoped that members would do their best to secure additional members for the lenguo among the people they knew; During the afternoon songs were sung by Mrs. Peacock, Mrs. Stevenson, . Miss Sullivan, and Miss Haybittle, Mrs. Kid-, ston playing the accompaniments. A' duet was also sung by tho, two latter vocalists. Afternoon tea formed a pleasant interlude in tho'proceedings. i&fis:*.'.
At yesterday's meeting of tho Victoria League, Miss Dora 'Wilson, on behalf of tho Victoria League Concert Party, made references to the debt .of gratitudo whicii members felt to Mrs. Chiitfield'for her kindness in accompanying them in thoir journeys to the camp and elsewhere when they -were giving their entertainments. Miss also spoko of the great assistance which tho Concert Party ..were in furthering the work of tlio parent league.
