FIGHTING RESUMED IN EAST AFRICA
GERMAN RAIDING COLUMNS ON THE MOVE BRITISH IN PURSUIT (Roc. May 30, 8.40 p.m.) London, May 29. An official dispatch Iroui East Atrica states: "The dry season is now upuroacning, favouring a resumption of military activity. The first days of May were marked by a general southward movement of too .German forces in the ltufiji Valley and coastal area. Those southward of the valleys were transferred to the Matandu Valley, whilst further south the raiders penetrated l'ortuguee territory towards tho border of Jdyassaland. burning native'villages, terrorising inhabitants, and carrying off food to their depots. Northward of Rovama a southward movement in tho central areas commenced early in February. German columns from Mahcngo proceeded towards Gumbiro and Siongea, finally breaking into two main bodies, ono going into the Portuguese border and the other, comnnded by Major Wintgens, breaking northward, ovading our columns operating between Kindva, Jrangi. and Lake Nyaesa, reaching Kitunda, in tho direction of Tabora, on May G. British. Rhodcsian, and other troops are in pursuit. The German commander was captured on May 22, sixty miles southwest of Tabova by Belgian troops cooperating with tho British from the Central railway."—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assu.Reutor.
