'—* —■ —r ' SPECIAL REPORT AS TO HIS SANITY. Cabinet had under consideration yesterday tho recommendation of the jury in the Butlor murder case. Charles Butler was found guilty at Christcknroh of the murder of a girl, Henrietta Poster, on April 8 last, and the jury' rccom- ' mended the man to mercy on account of ]n's low mentality. The defence in the icase was that Butler was not responsible for' his actions. It was adduced in evidence that Butler had been an L inmate of a mental hospital for thirteen months pemo years ago, and that his' mother's 6ister had also been in an asylum.
These, were the facts as Cabinet bad +0 consider them, and it Was decided to get a special report as to the mental condition of tbo accused before coming ■fo a conclusion as to whether the.death penalty should be carried out or not. The medical men appointed to make the report are Dr. Hay (Inspector-General of Mental Hospitals), Dr. Truby King, and Dr. Beattio. All three of these doctors tire exports in lunacy.
