The "Temps" points out that at the outbreak of war the German marine counted 1549 ships of 5,073,000 tonnage, and that during the war she has lost, apart from ships blockaded in neutral ports, 1,500,000 tons of shipping. If, as is likely iu the event of a German defeat, ships in foreign ports are held as guarantees to compensate ships sunk, German shipping would at the end of the war be reduced by 70 per cent.
