INTENSIVE GARDENING
=£900 WORTH FROM AN ACRE
How X'9oo worth of foodstuffs was produced from one acre of land was explained at Walton-on-Thamcs tribunal recently when, the exemption granted to an expert at the local Intensive Gardens was reviewed. Tlio proprietor said ho obtained fivo crops from the same ground, with four plantings at the same time, and .£9OO worth of food from one acre last year. It required very expert knowledge and very expert working. Carrots valued at J2BO were obtained from twothirds of an acre, and other crops were growing at the same time. One hundred similar gardens round London would save o£WO,OOO worth of foodstuffs from Holland yearly, saving tonnage and keeping money in the country. For eight acres his expert had the assistance of nine women and four mnn who were over-fl"c. Tho women carted manure and made beds, but without the expert they would be as sheep without a shepherd. The tribunal renewed the conditional exemption of tlio expert, aged forty.
