Tho death is reported of an old resident of the Wairarapa in- the person of Mr. E. S.' Richards. The late Mr. Richards, who was 85 years of age, leave 3 a grown-up family. Ho conducted a store in Carterton in tho early days.
Cablo advice received from London states that Pte. W. G. Pudney (son of Mr. Pudnev, dentist), who left with tho Third Reinforcement draft, has been discharged from the New-Zealand Expeditionary Force in England in order to take up a commission id the Royal Flying Corps. Professor J. Macmillan Brown experts to return to the Dominion early in September, after a visit to the l'acifac Islands.

Mr James Panning, of the teaching rtaff at South Wellington School, took farewell of his colleagues and pupils on. Fridav and will go into camp this week. As a "token of esteem, Mr. Fanning was presented, on leaving, with a handsome wristlet watch, and accorded all good wishes Mr. Fanning has been .prominently identified with local cricket and football, and took a keen interest in fostering these games in the city schools. Mr K J Graham, a master of the Brooklyn School,' has just severed his connection with the school to go into camp, and at the breaking-up ceremony he was accorded the heartiest wishes of the teachers and scholars fpr his welfare I and safe return. He was also the recipient of a safety razor and a knife from I tho scholars'of Standards 5 and G, and of a wristlet watch, suitably inscribed, from the teachers. Mr. James Mitchell, who died on baturday morning, was well known as managing director of Beath and Co., drapers, of Christchurch. The late Mr. Mitchell was born in Auckland 45 years ago, and was educated at- Timaru. After leaving school ho entered the drapery trade with a Timaru firm. Some 25 years ago howent to Christchurch, where lie,took up a position with Strange and Co., which he held for a number of years About nine vears ago lie was appointed managing director for Beath mid Co a posilion wliich ho retained until his death. In 1911 he visited London, and was there at'the outbreak of war, returning at the end of the year. For the past two years Mr Mitchell had been suffering fronr ill health. He spent some time in the North Island on a health-recruiting trip, hut the benefit he received was only temporarv. Mr. Mitchell was a keen bowler. For about twenty years he took a_ keen interest in. and was a director of, the YA?C A. in Chmtclmrch. He was also recognised as an influential member of the PreXterian Church.
