'Cable advice has -been, received in Christchurch that Lieutenant C. Cracroft Wilson, of an Imperial' Regiment, who'was at the taking of Kut-el-Amnra and Bagdad, has been admitted to the Colababa Hospital, Bombay, suffering from colitis. He is progressing favourably.
Advice from Greymouth reports the death, suddenly, of Mr. Frank Gardiner, transport clerk in the district office of the Railway Department. Mr. Gardiner was stationed for many years at New Plymouth, and also at'Palmerston North., He leaves, a widow and three young children.
Chaplain-Captain Mathieson, who is with the 26th Reinforcements, was farewelled at a large gathering in the Church of Christ, Vivian Street, on Thursday evening. Air. William Phillips, minister of the church, presided, and addresses were delivered by Chaplain-Captain Carter (Salvation Army), Rev. Mr. Rollings (Baptist), Chaplain-Captain Grinstead (Dominion Representative of the Church of Christ), and Mr. Fred'. Marshall (Wellington district). The Rev. Archibald Hunt wrote expressing regret at not being able to be present, and wished Chapplain Mathieson every success in his new work. A Bimilar message was also read from Mr. R. A.. Wright, M'.P. ChaplainMathieson responded in a few words, and thanked ' the different relieious bodies for their nomination. The Chaplain will represent the Associated Churches of Christ, the Baptists, the Congregationalists, and the Salvation Army. During the evening vocal and elocutionary items were given: Miss Hall was at the organ. Rifleman M. Hume,, son of Mr. J. Hume, of Featherston, has been killed iu action in Trance.
A farewell social was. tendered to Messrs. H. Alexander, W. Keys, M. Steele, S. Whiteman, and C. Swanson by the residents of Wallacevillo and district. Mr. A. Burrel .made a presentation to each man of various useful articles, amongst them being an auto strop, razor, wristlet watches, leather waistcoats, and torches. Each recipient suitably responded.
Private Edmund. Aitkenhead,' of Hal--combe, returned U New Zealand a fewweeks ago, after having been wounded at Armo'ntieres. In the' Somme offensive he suffered from shell shock, and was invalided home.' The residents of Halcombo welcomed him back on Tuesday night, and presented him with a gold medal. A substantial chcquo was also handed him from an anonymous donor.
