-■■» (Continued from page i.) Surprise Bag Day. Y'eterday afternoon a meeting of tho Surpriso Bag Day Committee was held in me- Y.AI.C.A. Buildings in Willis Street to.-complete'the arrangements for June 1. There was an excellent attendance of members, and Mrs. Gibbons 'presided. Very satisfactory reports of procress were made, and judging ]>y the gifts which have been promised for June 1 the enterprise should be very successful. One member of the committee stated that out of all tho merchants to whom she had appealed for prizes not one. had refused her, and each one had promised' 100 articles. In addition a pioco of laud at Northland had heen given by tho Conlan Estate '/agents, and Was said to bo valued at between .£SO-and .£7O. One small girl, aged thirteen; very anxious to help, made and filled. 100 bags herself. As b'matter of fact, the school children have given great assistance to the project. . The managers of the picture theatres have each promised to' give 40 tickets to be used as prizes, and Gamble and Greed aro giving 100 sixpenny tea tickets also as prizes. Among the many useful and varied articles which have been donated are a hot water kettle, hot-point irons, jewellery, cameras, etc. Messrs. M'Eldowhoy are lending tho ues of .their car and, a chauffeur • for the day, and Messrs. Hunt, Cpttrell and Co. have again most generously promised to placo their lorries, at the disposal of the committee and their helper? for tho occasion. A large number of filled hags have been promised, but the comrnittco will by no means refuse further, gifts ol this kind or of articles with Tvhich to fill them. Passing of a Pioneer,-. ' On Thursday evening, at her residence, "Llandaff," Masterton, the death took place of Mrs. Edwin Meredith, at the ago of 85 years. Tho deceased.lady had been in bad hcolth for some time, si) that her death .was not unexpected. She was the daughter of the .lute' Captain Frederick Chalmers, and was born m England, but came out to Tasmania with her parents when. very., young (states tho Masterton "Age"). In 1852 sho was married to the late Mr. Edwin Meredith, and after settling for a short while in Hawke's Hay, Mr. and Mrs.. Meredith •• came, in 1851, to tho Wnirarapa, resided for 25 years at "Riversdaie, WTiareama, and eventually took up .their abode at "Llandaff," near Masterton. Mrs. Meredith, with'..her husband, cheerfully faced the vicissitudes incidental to pioneering days in the Wairarapa, when long fides on horseback had to bo undertaken along dangerous "tracks and across swollen rivers. For many years past sho was an ardent worker on behalf of tho Anglican Church, and evidence of her generosity appears in the beautiful stained glass window and veredos presented to St .Matthew's Church, Masterton. • Mr! Meredith pre-deceased his wife Ly 10 years. Tho surviving children are- Mr .T. M. Meredith (Masterton), Mrs. Harold Smith- CPahiatua), Mrs. J. Mac-kersey (Wellington). Mrs. H. Dawson (Pahiatua), Mrs. ,T. B. Moodie (Wellington)', Mrs. A. A. Cameron (Cnstlepoint) Mrs' Slndden (Hutt), Miss Mary Meredith (Masterton), and Miss Ros'o Meredith (Masterton).

, Y.W.C.A. Notes. Women and girls have .-ospondod in tho League of .Honour's call to prayer during Empire Week. The special meeting for intercession on Wednesday afternoon was well attended, and women aro reminded that every Wednesday at 11 o'clock there is u meeting of women to remember "Those at tho Front," to which all aro invited. On Empire night a special service of intercession was held for "Kin;,' and Empire," when Mrs. Pearson, president of tho Y.W.C.A., and Mrs. M'Clay, vice-president, spoke on "Temperance, Purity, and Prayer." The soloists were Mrs. Bonnie, Miss .Thomas, and Mr. Crawford. This afternoon at .'1 o'clock there will be a girls' rally in the Y.W.C.A. club-rooms. All girls and women aro invited to attend. Miss M'Lean, M.A., will speak oil' "National Ideals," and it is hoped there will be a large enrolment of members of the League of Honour, which has boon formed to unite women and girls in the service of their King and country, and to inspire them with the highest ideals of "Strength and Honour."

In the Y.W.C.A. club-rooms to-morrow afternoon, at 4.15 o'clock, Miss H. and L. Keid, of the China Inland Mission, will speak. All girls and' women aro invited, and members and friends aro asked to make this meeting known. The association is specially interested in China, where the Australasian secretary. Miss Ella M'Neil, is working. News of her work in China will be given, and offerings to the foreign department will be received. Strangers to the city are specially welcome.

A mooting of tho committee of tho ambulance section of tho Women's Nntionnl Reserve was held yesterday afternoon. There wore present :'Mra. Porter, organising general secretary for New Zealand), Mrs. Henry Hall,.Mrs. Tripp, and Mrs. A. H. Waters (leader of tho section). Dr. Platts-Mills was unavoidably absent. The report and balance-sheet were read and adopted, tho latter showing a credit balance owing partly to the kindness of citizens in lending halls for lectures and practice and also to donations of money. Two classes were hold during tho year, and from the high percentage of marks which were obtained by the candidates it was ovident that considerable enthusiasm was shown in the work. Classes in first aid and liome nursing for mertiliers of the National Reserve wilt bo held almost immediately, and intending candidates are asked to send in their names at onco to Mrs. Doyle, 157 Fentherston Street.
