H. >Burges's, New Plymouth, .£lO 10s.; tie Mayor of Now Plymouth (Mr. C. H. Burgess), .£lO 10s. This brings the total to date, paid and promised, up to .£llsO. Women's National Reserve Concert. A large and appreciative audience attended the concert held in Fullford's Hall, Brooklyn; on Thursday evening, in connection with the Women's National Reserve A well-selected programmo was given by Mesdames Flockton and Bern pic, Misses Gawler, Trim, M'Carthy, E. and J. Turner, 0. and E. Cooney, TJ. CarwellCooke, Messrs. Archer, Trim, and Master Winston M'Carthy. Miss Nesta CarwellCooke delighted her audience with her graceful dances, and was rectnlled on each occasion. Master AVinston M'Carthy also won much appreciation with his humorous items. At the close of tho concert a hearty vote of thanks waa passed to tho performers, Mrs. Chapman, organiser of the programme, being specially mentioned. Pahiatua Notes. In spite of stormy weather the gift afternoon tea which was given on Wednesday afternoon by St. Agues's Guild in tho schoolroom for tho benefit of tho Surprise Packet Stall, which is to be one of the features of the Patriotic Shop, was very enjoyable and also successful in its results. The room had been very prettily decorated with bamboo and autumn foliage, and a number of guests attended. Tho object of tho Patriotic Shop is to benefit the funds of' tho Church of England Military Affairs Fund, and to assist the Surprise Packet Stall overyone brought with them gifts of a varied and useful character. The hostesses for the occasion were Mesdames Fenn, .T. D. C. Crewe, and Bisdee, and they were assisted by the members of the guild and several visiting members. . During the afternoon the Rev. Mr. Fenn, who had returned to Pahiatua from camp spocially for this, explained the object of the afternoon, and also gave somo information as to tho work of the Military Affaire Fund. Songs were contributed, by Mrs. Lilly and llrs. Nicholls,. and a recitation by Miss Tulloch. Somo gramophone items on a gramophone lent by Mr. F. G. Moore also added to tho enjoyment of tho afternoon. Protection of Women and Children. A meeting of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children was held Tcsterday afternoon. Mrs. A. Hoby presided. Thero wero present Mesdames Chapman, Griffiths, G. Ponsonby, and G. .Winder. A large number of cases which hail been investigated were reported upon and others wero being attended to. Luke) .has received the gift of a bagalello board for Victoria Hospital, which means that each floor is now provided with one. As a work of appreciation for tho hospitality which i tho - Mayoress and lier Kntertainment Committed have extended to soldiers at regular inlorvals in tho Town Hall, "J.H." has sent the Mayoress the sum of £'i for the furtherance of this work, and F. Wheeler 10s. Mrs. Luke is very glad to receivo this tangible support, nnd tho friendly interest which it shows in the success of theso evenings. Mrs. Sydney Hall,' who has been staying with her mother, Mrs. Cleland (Tinakori Road), returns to-day to Feilding. Mrs. Lloyd (Auckland) is visiting Mrs. Ldwry, Hawko's Bay. Mrs. Salek, the Terrace, is visiting Napier. Tho. Kelburn. Hataitai, and North Kilbirnio Women's National Resorve made «C 126 at tho Wellington Red Cross Shop yesterday. ' As thero aro some lemonade, cakes, jams, and pickles still unsold,' tho salo will bo continued this morning at 10 o'clock. Tho cakes' wero sent in large quantities, and were of the very best. Customers may bo assured that all the produce is thoroughly good, and will be sold at market rates.

Owing to the war, the Highland Ball to which many people in tho past have looked forward to, will be abandoned this year. All the male members of the Scottish Society who were eligible for the First Ballot have been claimed, and it is felt by the remaining members that too much merrymaking is out of place at the present time.'

Women's Christian Temperance Union. An "at home" of the Wellington Central Union was held in the IVeslcyan Church, Brooklyn, on Thursday, atternooii. Mrs. S. Evans presided, mid ilrs. Mrs. Lec-Con'ie addressed the gathering, and explained tho .objects of the recently-issued "Manifesto," and urged al! women to work and pray for tho total prohibition of the drink traffic. Last year, in spite of nil the need for assistance for lielgiuui, Sorbin, Poland, and Northern France, the drink bill of the United Kingdom had increased by .£22,000,000. Mrs. Cowio told how the farmers in the South Island had endeavoured to carry out the request of the Minister of Agriculture to put in ipore crops. When they sent an order for ploughs, the ploughs could not be delivered on account of tho shortage of room on the railway trucks, but many kegs of beer were carried. 'Thus beer was evidently of more importance than ploughs. In England, while a nurse had lo refuse the request of a wounded soldier for a spoonful of sugar in his tea, tons of sugar were being used in a brewery in sight of the hospital, i Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies of the Hewing Guild of the church. The acting-secretary of the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board acknowledges with thanks tho receipt of an Edison graphophone, with a large number of records, presented to the Hospital Board by Mr. and Mrs. F. o'. Pinny for tho use of the children at (ho T. G. M'Carthy Convalescent Home at Belmont. Miss Rothenberg (lion, librarian of the Soldiers' Club) acknowledges with thanks ljooks, papers, and magazines for tho use of the soldiers from: Mesdamcs Brad-liey-Williams, J. Joseph, Redcliffe, Harris, H. Kirkcaldio, C. Richardson, W. Nathan, Yaldwyn, Hill, England, Greig, Mellins, M'Donald, Misses Kirkcaldie and Halse, Mr. A. 1). C'ruickshank; cards, Mrs. Arthur Fearce.
