WANGANUI MEETING BIG STEEPLECHASE WON BY GLUEPOT A GREAT FINISH. By Telegraph—Stecial Correspondent. Wanganui, May 2<f. The Winter Meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club opened' to-day, ivlieu some excellent racing was witnessed.

With tho oxcjjption ot Cora Ora all the acceptors started in the Borough Handicap. The public made Chakwana favourite, with several of the others well backed. There was some delay at the barrier, but tho start was a good ono. Lady General and Interlude led down the back, but on the bend ths latter was done with. A furlong from homo Lady General was tiro lengths out from Play Off, Veto, sind Potentiality, AVaimatao and Ilia Cara, who were in a line. The whole of the leaders were proclaimed winners in the run home, but Doeley's mount retained the lead, and won'well. Mia Cara just beat Interludn, and then camo Potentiality, Veto, and Play Off. • Chakwana and Potentiality both got'vciy bad runs.

Czaromis, who camo with a great reputation from Hastings, was a slightly tetter favourite than Kiwitea in tl»e Flack Steeplechase. The winner got up at tho finish with an electrical run. after being kept well hack the whole way. Ho is clearly eome good, and should win in much bettor company. Grey Guard and Itoyal Patron made tho early running, but the former fell, and Royal Patron failed to see it out. Kiwitcsi raced woll, as did Union Jack and Merry Jack, who wcro in the. other places. Gluepot awl Bracburn divided tho rcaehine honours in the big steeplechase, and Ihero was nothing between thorn, Nita, Slyrax, and Imposter at tho finish. II; was the finest steeplechase oven seen on tho 'Wangaimi course, and Handihapper 11. Coylo socured a distinct triumph. Tmposter led for two miles and a half, with tho whole field jumping beautifully, and then Styrax took charge, T)ilt at th'e last fonco Gluepot and Bracburn and Nita joinad in, and after a. sensational finish, tho Aucklandcr got tho verdict by a head, with Nita a neck away, am! Plyrax, Impostor, and Marton'in a cluster. The'winner was well handled, by K. Henderson, while Dccrcy, did great work on tho top-weight, and covered less ground than any of the others, but the weight,told at tho finish. Colorado, who liaH'nnly rai.-ed onco oral- fences this HCiiiion, was Micr backed than anything else in Iho Hark Hurdles. Ho is a. fair horse, and will see a bettor day, but Montana is'also capable of a lot of improvement. Splcndidus made tho running for. six furlongs, when he gave way to Calais, but I ho'latter had no chance when tho last lialf-milo waa entered. Hero Colorado 'and Montana shot out, but tho latter had 100 much poco on tho flat, and won well, while Colorado was punched out to bent Otter. Waiotiirc and Kohinahina were tho next to finish.

Tho public, was wido of the murk, for the little-fancied Sir Firfier look charge at. the lialf-milc, and won. nicely from Bon IJevc, who wan kept too far owl of it, and certainty should have won. Lconla. ran a fair race in third place, and then camn liuporlno and Golden March togothoi'. Bon Jtevo's rider iras flompollefl to interview the stewards after the race. The Derby irinner is now a firm favourite for the Great Northern Hurdles.

The Connolly Handicap resulted in tlio

triumph of the two favourites, Gang Awa', and Ilendra. The former took charge early, wbilo Hciulra was always in a prominent position. Iho l''orclol| horso iron nicely, whilo Hondra, Rewi Polo, and Antwerp linishcrl in a Hue. Princo Delaware ran n surprisingly good race, and was up with Gang Awa' to the home turn, whero ho fado4 out of it. Gang Awa , was ;t betlor horso on (op of the ground, and his de-feat at Awapuni must hn put down to the (joing. Analogue did best of the remainderTho Trentham-trained Johnny Walker was a good 'favourio in tho Purua Hack Race, and he ivon very decisiTely. R\-\-stone and Trickery were prominent lor half a mile, but tho favourite was always handy, and in the straight ho came away and won very easily fronj Hexton end Eio. The latter was heavily supported, and ran well, but had no chance with tho winner. Ryletone and Signorella worn tho next to finish.
