THE POSITION AT GAZA
AN OFFICIAL STATEMENT (Rcc. May 24, 5.5 p.m.) London, May 23. In the House of. Commons, Mr. J. I. HacjPherson (Parliamentary Secretary to the Wnr Office) stated' thiit the British forces on the Egyptian front were in close touch with the Tuvtish main position at Gaza, which , had been extended by a series of trenches and a redoubt eleven miles south-east of Gaza. The 'J,'urks had beeu reinforced, and their position was one of great natural strength, their left flank being protected by broken, waterless country. "Under theso conditions/' said the speaker, "our progress necessarily has been slow. But there has been no serious fighting since April 19. We have, however, continued to gain ground, and have consolidated our position."—H«uter.
