TAILORS' WAGES
Claims for aneiv award have been filed by the Wellington Tailors' Union. Tho proposals aro Tor a It-hour week, as against 48 at present, and an increase in the log-rato froin Is. to Is. 1>!<1. an hour. For time-workers it is proposed that the minimum weekly wage shall be increased from .£2 15s. to ,C3ss. A new clause Iras been inserted providing , for payment for landing time ovoi 15 minutes when waiting for the return of garments. The preference clause is slightly altered. It nlay he explained thnt very fotv tailors in Wellington work for a weekly wage. The majority aro paid for the work done on a scale set • out allowing a certain time for each garment or each piece of work. Thus 3t hours may bo allowed for tho making of a frock coat, and if the Inilnr does the work in less lime he is still entitled to payment for the hours specified in the time-sheet at the hourly rate iixed. In tho new claims there are various amendments to tho time-state-ment, fliid a new section ia introduced concerning military uniforms, which have not hitherto been thus provided for. The claims will be. heard bofore tho Conciliation Commissioner on June 7.
