ELECTORS' ASSOCIATION
ANNUM, MEETING., The annual meeting of the Greater Wellington Town Planning and Munici-' pal Electors' Association was held in No. 2 Committee Boom, Town Hall, last njght. Mr. T. Ballinger was in the chair, and about thirty members were present.
The report of the executive enunciates the matters that had received attention during the year, and stated that the association's candidates had been' "sinKularly successful" at the municipal elections. Sixteen meetings of the executive had been held during the year, The year l«d closed with a credit balance of £2i. Ihe cost of the municipal election campaign had been .£163 12s. 10d,. The chairman said that he thought the association could .congratulate itself on the work that had been done during the year. A deputation that had waited upon the Hon. W. P. Massey with regard to the milk supply had secured very little satisfaction. His own idea was that if there was to be a milk denot it should be established by the Government and not by the City Council, which represented only a limited district. He moved the adoption of the report. Mr. Leigh Hunt seconded the motion. He Baid that the association had crown into a representative body, and he hoped to see its work still further extended. He would like to see an effort made to revive tho movement for civic education, by arranging for winter lectures and debates. There was plenty of scone for good work by the association, and with tho continued support of its members the organisation would servo a very usenil purpose indeed. The motion was carried. The following officers were elected:— I President, Hon. J. G. W. Aitken; vicepresidents, Messrs. T. Ballinger, Leigh Hunt, and Cook; committee, Dr. A. K Newman, M.P.. and Messrs. E. C. .Tack, C. B. Wheeler. H. W. Tolan, P. W. Manton, E. J. Alderson, and L. A. Georee; secretary and treasurer. Mr. J. L. Arcus; auditor, Mr. Ernest Hunt. A number of matters of municipal interest were discussed. Several mombers iirjjed that the City Council should do ]u6hce to citizens whoso homos froiited private roads. The council should promote legislation enabling it to take over all private streels which* had boon shown as public, streets on land transfer plans. I ho matter was referred io tho cxecutivo for consideration.
Mr. .Loigh Hunt reforred to (,ho nuostion of fronfagos. Ho said that outside Wellington proper people wore allowed to build on sections having 20ft. frontages and 3000 square feet air space. Ho urged that tlie minimum frontage, «x----cept in special cases, should be 40ft. Tho present by-law permitted tho creation of slum areas, since houses could be.'irowded together on tiny sections. The matter should bo taken up by the now councillors. He moved that the City Council should bo urged to amend' Iho by-laws to provide for a minimum frontago of •lflft. for residential sections outside the city proper, with provision for cases whero the topography of the land mado a narrower frontage ds&irablo. Mr: Ward said tho council did tiofc grant permits for houses to bo built on sections 20ft. wido. When building sections had tnat narrow frontage they widened out fiirthor back. It would bo bettor bo insist that the sections must liavo a width of 10ft. at the point where the house, was placed. The,chairman said that a general application of a 40ft. frontage would involve hardship in some cases, einco it would prevent owners making u?e of tho back portions of very deep sections. Tho motion was carried. \
Several othor matters were inontioned, and tho meeting adjourned until Tucsrlny next.
