Soldiers' Evening at Town Hall. One of tho most largely attended ovenings for soldiers that have yet been given by the Mayor and Mayoress (Jlr. and ilrs. J. P. Luke) and their Entertainment Committee was that which took place in the Town Hail on Saturday evening:. Tho man of the Twenty-Sixtli Reinforcements were the snecial guests of honour but the occasion "was not confined to them bnly as soldiers belonging to other Reinforcements were also present as well as relatives and friends. A very enjoyable musical programme had been arranged by Miss Segrief, and contributing to it were Miss Segrief, Miss R. Segriof, Corporal Fyffe, and the Misses M'EnToe' and Segrief (the latter contributing a duet). Dancing was another attraction, and in regard to this the soldiers showed great enthueiasni. The Trentham Band, as usual, supplied excellent music. Mrs. LeAf arch and played several extras. With so many guests to attend to, the ladies in charge of the refreshments worn, kept exceedingly busy when supper time arrjved, but many helpers mado tho task lighter than would have otherwise been the case. Before the evnning was brought to an end. Captain Fisher, on behalf oE the 26th Reinforcements, thanked the Mayor and Mayoress and the. committee for their hospitality, and said how greatly it h'ad been appreciated at all times by tho soldiers. Lieutenants Fagnn and Thomas also spnke in the same strain, tho appreciation shown and expressed being very gratifying to tho.=e who assisted with the entertainment of soldiers. As is usual on these occasions, the Trentham Band was provided with refreshments on arrival at tho hall. Tho Mayor and Mayoress were toth pTesent, .and welcomed and farewelled the. soldiers.
Two-Garment Society. The annual distribution of clothing by tho above ■ society took place at Air. C. H. Izard's icsidence, Golder'e Hill. Tho eccretary and organism , , Mrs, lzard, is absent in England, and her assistance was much missed, but, thanks to the good work of the members and vico-pro-sidents, all the arrangements were successfully carried out. Tho vice-presi-dents wish to thank the associates for gifts of wa-nn clothing, various business houses for reduction on purchases, and Mr. lzard for his kindly hospitality. Miss -Brans, who has been tho head mistress of the Clyde Quay School for a number of year.?, is to retiro from the service of the Wellington Education Board on superannuation next month. Sister Harris and Nurse M'Whinncy have resigned their positions on tho Greytown Hospital-staff, having been appointed to positions in St. Helens Hospital, Auckland.. Jliss Grace Berry, senior sister at the Timaru Hospital, has been appointed as m'ntron of the Pahiatun Hospital, nnd will take up her duties about tho middle of June. Mrs. Maitland (Blonheim) is staying with her sister, Miss Speed. Owing to their hours off duty not suiting the trains, the nurses at Trentham Hospital have- found it a very difficult matter to get into town, and this fact has been at times a very serious deprivation to them. IJpon representations being made to the Mayoress (Mrs. J. P. Luke) by Colonel Andrews of tho obstacles which prevented them very often from making excursions to "Wellington, Mrs. Luke made the need known, ami in response Colonel Moorhouse has given the nurses at Trentham Hospital the use of his five-seater motor-car for the duration of tlio war, a gift which it is needless to say the nurses will appreciate to the utmost.
At the Austral Salon, Melbourne, on May 7, an "at home" was given in honour of Miss Alice He«s (Mrs. Max Vogrich), who i was a favourite Australian singer of days Rone by. Mrs. Quinnell presented Mrs. Vogrich with a beautiful bouquet, and welcomed Tier back to Australia. . Darincr the musical programme that followed Miss Natalie Dawson played two pianoforte compositions by Max Vokrich, and Misses Olivo Godwin, Gertrude Johnson and Browne also appeared. A comedietta, "The Impertinence of That Creature," was played after afternoon tea.
On Saturday the bagatelle board which Had been given by Mr. G. Shirtcliffe, in answer (o the Mayoress's appeal for bagatelle boards for the use of convalescent soldiers in hospiftal, was sent up to tlio Victoria. Military Hosptal. Tn tim afternoon Mrs. Luke, by M>'s. V. Townsend, visited the hospital and found Hi"? pntients greatly (innreeiotive of the gift. Women's Christian Temperance Union. The monthly meeting of tho Wellington Central Union was held on Friday last. Mrs. ,1. K. Archer was iu the chair. Mrs. Hanlan, president of the district union, gave an interesting address on her impressions of the convention recently held in Auckland. Mrs. Hanlan s.ii<l that the tirao epent at the convention was well repaid by the spiritual uplift which delegates-received. Mrs. Daw's presidential address was most impressive, as was also- the address given by Mrs. Peryman at the i nterce.ssory meeting. A unique feature of tho convention, was tho attendance of Maori delegates. One Maori woman addressed tho convention, while another ono acted as interpreter.
