SIX O'CLOCK CLOSING
A MATTER FOR LEGISLATION, By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, May 18. Tho Mayor has received tho following reply from Sir James Allen regarding the question of the G o'clock closing of hotels:—"The Government has no power by War Regulation, or otherwise, to deal with G o'clock closing. An amendment of ths law would be necessary to deal with tho matter. The Government has no power to submit the matter to a referendum without a direction from Parliament. Parliament will be called together at the usual time next month, It is considered necessary that the Prime Minister (Mr. W. P. Massey) and Sir Joseph Ward should be present Cabinet when the early-cloaing question is discussed. The matter will bo brought before the Prime Minister and Sir Joseph Ward immediately on their return."
