The Rev. J-'Farquharson Jones, formerly minister of the Baptist Church, Esk Street, lnvercargill, has accepted a call to the combined Baptist and Congregational Churches at Thames.
Mr. Thwaites, late assistant master at Clyde Quav School, was on Thursday presented by the staff and tho senior, pupils with a silver afternoon tea service, in recognition of his services at tho school lor a number of years past.
Mr. Sydney Broadley (assistant curator at the j'orto'bcllo Marine Fish Hatchery) lias becu appointed an inspector of fishcries for Utago, in placo of Mr. AV. Adams' (curator), who has resigned.
Mr.- George C. Barratt, of Wainunu Estate, Fiji, died at a private hospital in Auckland. Mr. Barratt (says tho "Star") came from India when a young man, being a tea planter. He served in the Armed - Constabulary for somo years at Parihaka, Waikato, and Koroma. Later ho went to Fiji, and joined Captain Robbie, of Levuka. Tho partmers hnvo extensive tea, rubber, cocoa, and coconut plantations. • . ■ i
• At tho conclusion of the Church .Choir (Dunedin).'concert on. Tuesday night, the members adjourned to Stuart Hall to entertain Private Gordon Macdonald, a member of the choir, who is now down on final leave, and Mr. h. Paget Gale presented him, on behalf ot the° choir, with a shaving outfit.
. Lieutenant H. G. Livingstone, of the 13th (North Canterbury and. Westlandj Uegiment, wlio has been acting for some time as adjutant to the Ist Alounted Rifles (C.Y.C.) has parsed the examination qualifying him tor promotion to tne rank of captain.
The death occurred in Dunedin on Wednesday of Captain William Blagdon. The deceased was a fire brigade man, and had been a familiar figure at every demonstration and conference hold in tho Dominion for years past. Betore coming to New Zealand (over forty years a »o) he was a member of the Plymouth Fire Brigade. He. was a .prominent figure in connection with the United Fire B 1gades' Association of New Zealand and held the 25 years' service gold star. Altogether he had over 33 years service as a hrgman.
Tho death is reported of. Mr. George David Thomas,- of Wanganm, a veteran of the Maori War (says the Auckland ••Star"! Mr Thomas was attachea, when quite vo'ung. to the Tflth Begnuent, and went with it to India, serving through the Mutiny, ■ The regiment arrived in the Dominion in the ea.il>. Mi.ties, and was associated with the fighting in "the Maori War. Mr.-Thomas enlisted in the 2nd Waikato liegiment in ISIiG, and in 18GS joined tho Armed Constabulary Field Force. With this body ho was on active 6crvico till the end of 1870, and he afterwards served in the Taranaki district, where he "was 'when he resigued in 1873; Mr. Thomas had three sons at the war, one being killed at Gallipoli, and two are now 'soi'ving' in Franco. A widow and three daughters also survive him. One of the latter ,is Mrs. Thomas Lowe, of Auckland.-

His many old friends will bo pleased to hear of his promotion.
Mr. S. E. Hunt, statipnm aster, at Carterton, who has been transferred to Ngahauvnnga, was farewelled by a. large numLer of citizens at the Council Chamber, Carterton, last night.. The Mayor presided, a.nd on behalf of Mr. Hunt's well-wishers presented him with a-bank draft for fifty guineas* a. framed photograph of the railway-station and yards, and a. piece of silver. plate suitably inscribed. Several citizens spoke ■of the courtesy that Mr.'Hunt had shown, .and of'the "manner in which" he had carried out his duties. Mr. • Hunt suitably responded.' • Dr. W. .7.- Barclay, Medical Superintendent of the Wellington Hospital, was married at New Plymouth yesterday to Nurse Violet .Peterson.
