MASTERTON NOTES

One or two bullocks that havo recently arrived at Masterton from tho north have died from the effects of ergot. Since April 14 last, thirty-eight cases of scarlet fever have been reported in Masterton. Tho outbreak is of a irnld character, ami now appears to have'been checked. . At its meeting on Wednesday night, the Mastorton Borough Council decided to grant a war bonus of 10 per cent, to all men under the control of the borough engineer, excepting thoso who are at present in Teceipt of a bonus. A wool-classing and sorting class for women at the Masterton Technical School is being well .patronised. The instructor reports that the lady pupils are exceptionally quick in grasping the technical terms, and their fine touch gives, them a-great advantage over, male pupils in selecting the various- classes of wool. The AVaingawa Freezing Works havo put through less stock this season than in former seasons. The works have a. capacity of 200,000 carcasses, and at" present thero are only 100,000 carcasses in the chambers. If half this quantity is got away, it is hoped to be able to go through next season .without a break. Tho ton per cent, war "bonus to employees of the Masterton Borough Council will represent in the aggregate between XSOO and per year. •The following resolution was; pnssed at a meeting of the Masterton Borough Council:—"That this council, as a contributing body, ■ expresses its strongest disapproval of the action of the Wairarapa Ho6pltal and Charitable Aid Board in increasing the fees for hospital treatment to Ds. per day, and that this reso. lution "be forwarded to the various contributing bodies." The Hon. .T. A. Hanan, Minister of Education, has intimated his intention of Tisiting, Masterton in the course of a few days.
