THE ENGLISH PIERROTS
A DELIGHTFUL ENTERTAINMENT
A very big hit was made by iho English Pierrots, who returned to the Con-, cert Chamber last evening after years' absence, and received an enthusiastic welcome from an audience that filled every available seat. The show, which: consisted of ten clever people, is as clean as ever, but the .combination is better and stronger, and, in some instances, theo degree of finished artistry with whichl they invested their work was away beyond what we have been accustomed toin this class of entertainment, and the>, Pien-ots, beyond all doubt, will maita' I many new friends and strengthen their-', I grip on old ones during, the six weeks" : season inaugurated last evening. Ninneri-; cally the men predominate, artistically- , tho ladies. Never havo we seen in. cos-] I tume comedy such fine work as that, which Miss Elsa Langley treated the • audience to last evening. She was always.; dainty and charming, but without losingany of her native modesty or girlish charm, she has sharpened her wits, and.; every little scene, every pose, and each, flitting expression shows the complete; artist. Her success is the alliance cfj brains; talent, and personality. She is almost embarrassingly sincere in _ her yokel song, *"E Kissed Oi Once, . which.! becomes a little comedy in tier hands. "Mv Honey Baby" was sweetly appealui?' in its tender solicitude, and "She-ft as My Friend," recited as by a Erench girL in* broken English, disclosed Miss Langley as a reciter with vivid powers of expression. Another gem was Miss Langr toy's delicious yearning in the duet "Santa Fe," with Mr. Leslio Austin. Another richly-gifted performer is Miss Billie Wilson, a brilliant child impersonator in voice, manner, and expres; sion. Miss Wilson sang "Slutuberlaiid. and then captured all hearts in tl.e comic kiddy song, "Mumps,, •to whict cho had to append the recitation Babies and Kittens." All those who hsve children of five or six yoars old fhould hear them rccite through tho lips of Jsuuo Wilson. Miss Edith Harrild, a new sonrano, lios a well-trained voice of soma power and sweetness, and will succeed even better than last evening when sh® becomes a little more used to the stage.; The men are a good, useful lot-most ot ; them admirablo singers with a bit it comedy at their com-mniift. Mr. Davxl Lyle is a ringing, robust tenor, produced 1 . with ease and even throughout the ters. Last night lie sang, Wish of My Heart," "Coming Home," ond la Dreams," all in good taste. Mr. Key Cooke, tho basso, struck favour in rh&. Floral Dance," and bwree the speed limit; in "Will o' the Wisp." Mr. Leslie Austin is an attractive light comedian with, a serviceable baritone voice, jle about tho "Girlie Girls," ambled about in skirts, and was at homo-m the Santa. Fe" scena. An old friend turned « J Mr W. P. Tumor, whoso ot imrtu has not been dimmed. He got home m his old "Father" song, and with unctiou as tho stout Bobby in. "The Corner of tho Street" and th* neda"oguo of "Tho Village School. Mi. Charles Lawrence is at home •in an>thin" His comedy characters aie diaiui. with a sure hand, and his monologues won very amusing. The laughter grow* iU thebrigMestShow of its kind seen here for many,, years the Pierrots (who are to be com- • for their wholesomeness) deserve well tho hands of the Wellington public.
