SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Concert at Returned Soldiers' Club. An excellent concert, organised by Sirs. H. I'. Wood, was Riven in tho Returned Soldiers' Club last evening. There whs 11 very good attendance of members and their friends,_ and much appreciation was expressed of the various items. An opening chorus was spiritedly sung J>y the , whole of the performers, and following it I Mrs. 11. 11.I 1 . Wood, Jlr. \Y. W. Goudie, Hiss 31. M'Keown, Mr. H. I' 1 . Wood, all contributed songs. Miss Janie l'etrie recitcd,'Jliss E. Churchill gave a monologue, and Mr. W. W. Crawford contributed a humorous recital. The vocal duct of Alessrs. Goudie and Wood was another muck appreciated item, and the final chorus given by the performers ended a very enjoyable concert, for which hearty thanks were expressed. Supper in the tearoom upstairs followed, and a dance filled in the remainder of the evening. "Charley's Aunt" Social Club. At the fortnightly gathering of the "Charley's Aunt" Club held in the club rooms in Courtenny Place, tho following contributed to the programme:—Miss 15. Keaucy, Mr. Donaldson, Miss Segrief, Mr. Charles Moore, Mr. W. B. Keaney, Hiss Pethorick, Miss Ruby Scott, aud Mr. L. C. Barnes, songs; Xlr. liowell and Mr. Paul Latham, recitations; Mr. Harry Jupp, a cornet solo; and Mr. George Peek, a monologue. Tho overture was j played by tho club's orchestra, and the concluding item was a seeno from "Sherlock Holmes," in which the characters were most ably taken by Mr. Norman Aitken as Professor Jloriarty, Sherlock Holmes by Mr. W. W. Crawford, Dr. Watson by Mr. Prank Thomas, and "Billy" by Mr. W. B. Keaney. Sherlock Holmes's study formed the background for the scone. Corporal Ronald K. Lyon was the chairman of tho evening, and' there was a good attendance of members. Supper was served in the interval, and a very enjoyable evening ended with the singing of tho National Anthem, Miss Mabel Macandrew is visiting Syd--ney. Miss 1\ Shand (Timaru) iB 6taying with her sister, Mrs. Munro. Mrs. .White (Greytown) is visiting Mrs. A. M. Johnson, Bolton Street. Miss Letts (Christcburch) lias been spending a few days in Wellington, and is leaving for tho south at the end of the week. Mrs. Algar Williams has taken a house at Sumner for the winter. Mrs. Mirams (Christchurch) has l>eon visiting Wellington.

Miss ,f. Wilkin, who spent some time assisting in tho Taumaru Hospital (Lowry Bay), has returned to Christ- I church. Miss Thornton (Christchurch) is visiting her sister, Mrs. T. Jordon (Masterton). From the depot of the Christchurch branch of the- Countess of Liverpool Fund there wero sent away recently 174 . cases containing 6000 parcels for France; J 34 cases (500 parcels) for Egypt; 500lbs. 5 of fruit, cake, and six cases of jam, for 1 men on transports; the monthly quota of 1 housewives to Wellington; the monthly j quota of parcels to Mesopotamia; and 6 the monthly quota of parcels for prison- | era of war. The resignations of Nurses Allan, MacLemian, and Hill from the staff of the Wellington Hospital were accepted by the hoard with regret at yesterday's meeting. A discussion took place at a Wanganui Bed Cross meeting as to — whether a lady or gentleman should ho elected as president of the society. One lady.considered that a prominent business man with business training should beelected. Another said that women were quite ' capable of managing their own business affairs, and they would be tho laughing stock of the place if they elected a man as the head of a Women's Committee. The former president, a lady, would not stand for re-election unless _ the meeting was unanimous in wishing it. As this was apparently not so. it ="| was agreed to ask the Hon. Gilbert Carson, M.L.C., to take the position. j Tho members of the Thorndon Croquet ' Club helil a very pleasant afternoon in j tho club house, the occasion being a fare--1 well to the playing season. An excellent [ tea was provided, after which Mrs. C. i Richardson, president of the club, prei sentcd tho trophies donated by several I members to tho successful competitors of i tho various competitions. During the I playing season monthly tournaments were held in aid of the club's Wounded j Soldiers' Fund, which it will bo rcmemj bered provided last year two patent Fow- | lw beds and equipment to the Military i Hospital. The amount on hand from - I these tournaments and voluntary sn)>j scriptions is sufficient to provide for two I moro similar beds and mattresses, and the members have unanimously decided ! that they should be sent at once to the hosnital. as thev are much appreciated by invalided soldiers. Two very pleasant features of the afternoon were the presentation by the club of a silver vase to _ Mrs. O'Do'nnoll as champion, and a ~ beautiful handbag to Mrs. George Johnson (lion, secretary). Appreciation. The following letter of appreciation was lately received by Mrs. Luke from an officer on one of tho transports. He says; "A very hearty word of thanks is due to you from the whole ship's company for the gifts which you, as head of the Citizens' and Liverpool Funds, so kindly and thoughtfully placed aboard the transport. During some rather , severe aud particularly cold weather tho boxes of mufflers and balaclavas were of very material value. 1 writo with knowledge, as tho gift poods were placed in' my charge. Tho library is a pronounced success, also the sports. It may interest you to know that the personal gift goods, forwarded through the capable hands of Captain Billon, were all handed out to the respcctivo owners before IS hours out. The lemons were a great boon; some still remain in.perfectly good condition. Magazines and paper-covered books are handed out weekly. . . . Wo are a thoroughly happy ship, good feeding, combined with a judicious mixture of (raining and exercise, is keeping everyone very fit.
