VICTORIA COLLEGE
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. ; The monthly meeting of iho Victoria College Council was . held last night. There were present: Mr. T. B. Fleming (who .presided in the absence of the chairman), the Hon. J. 6. \Y. Aitken, the Hon. A. T. Maginnity, Dr. C. Prendergast Knight, Dr. Hector, Professor J. M. E. Garrow, and Messrs. \/. S. La Trobe, It. M'Callum, C. IV Morison, A. R. Atkinson, W. H. Morton, and R. A. Wright. •' On the recommendation of the Business Committee it was decided that Dr. Cotton bo permitted to lecture once a week at tho "Weraroa, Experimental Farm (where students are being given instruction in agricrilturo by the Agricultural Department), and also to hold a private class in surveying there during tho year. A student who found himself unable to completo the course of studies for which he had paid his fees had asked that the fees be refunded. It was decided that the fees be held in <case he should wish to complete his course at a later date. ' The estimates for tho year 1917-18 were discussed and approved. There were no new items in the estimates. On the motion of the Hon. J. G. W. Aitken, Mr. Clement Watson, 8.A., was re-elected chairman. Tho Eev. W. A. Evans was re-elected' treasurer. A resolution expressing tho sympathy of the council with Professor Eanlcino Brown, who is somewhat seriously indisposed, was affirmed on the motion of the Hoii. A. T. Maginnity. Dr. C. P. Knight expressed the regret of members that Mr. T. R. Fleming was shortly to leavo the council owing to his impending departure for Duuedin. He expressed great appreciation of Mr. Fleming's work for the college, and submitted a resolution recording the council's sense of tho generous service rendered by him to the college. The- motion was supported ly Mr. U. M'Calhini, and carried. Mr. Fleming, acknowledging the motion, said that it was more than ho deserved, but he did claim that he had done his best for the college. Ho rolated something of his part in the initial steps taken for the establishment of tho college, saying that ho had taken keen interest and the greatest satisfaction in tho development of the institution. Ho regretted that he would have to sever his connection with it.
