PATRIOTIC SOCIETY

ANOTHER. QUEEN CARNIVAL MOOTED. A meeting of the Exceulivo Commitlee of the Wellington branch of tlio New Zealand Patriotic Society was hold in the offices of the War Eolief Association last ovening. Mr. James M'lntosh presided. The statement of assets and liabilities at December 31, 1916, which was approved and adopted, showed n balance of assots over liabilities of £2180 13s. 2d. It was reported that since its formation the society had handed about £10,000 over to the trustees to be expended for the purposes for which the money bad been raised. Some discussion took place as to the advisability of buying a certain estate at Lower Hutt for the_ purpose of treating returned soldiers mentally afflicted through shock. It was decided that a deputation from the society should wait on the Hon. Sir Jamos Allen, Acting-Prime Minister, to find out if the Government would talco over the place and maintain it at its own expense, provided the society raised the money to purchase it. ' It was decided that on Empire Day, Juno 3, as was the case last j'oar, aunited service should take place at the Town Hall. Returned soldiers will be asked to parade, and it is hoped that the procession will be led by a military band. The arrangements for the .parade and service were left in tho Lands of Messrs. Lewis and Peak. The chairman brought up tho jnatter of holding another Queen Carnival to raise funds for the wounded soldiers. Hβ considered that funds were as much required now as ever they were. The memory of the last Queen Carnival had worn off somewhat, and he thought that it was time to again make a strenuous appeal for funds, and that a Queen Carnival was as eood as means as any to raise them. Tho idea was favoured by the memhers fenerallv, and it was flecided to (if possible) hold the.carnival early next spring._ A. special meeting of the committee is to deal solely with the question.
