MEN'S LIVES AT STAKE
London, May 13. • The Minister of Munitions (Dr. C. Mdison) states that the officials of various unions consider that the men ■should resume work on Monday, and await an accurate explanation of the circumstances. Tie, Minister states, emphatically, that the supplies of aircraft, heavy Runs, howitzers, tanks, nnd other materials, will be seriously delayed by the present illegal action. It will also impede the Western offeiieive.'and numberless lives will be unnecessarily sacrificed. Some papers allege that a secret assooiation of shop stewa'rds is controllinc tho engineers' strike, > which is epreading. No officials aro assuming responsibility for the "strike. At a well-attended meeting of the Enginemen, Firemen, and Cleaners' Association at Taumamnui on May 13, strong exception was taken by members to the action of the Railway Department in taking a. second ballot of employees after they had already been balloted for under the Military Service Act, and considered that men should be called -up in the order in •which they wero drawn under the Military Service bailot.
