CONFERENCE FAILED PARTIES UNABLE TO AGREE STATEMENT BY MINE OWNERS News of what happened at the conference between the coal-mine owners and the delegates of the Miners' Federation is now released for publication. The effect of it is that the conference failed of its purpose; no settlement was made. The union delegates came to the conferenco with the same set of demands which the employers had rejected at the February conference, but on this last ocoasion the federation had added three other clauses -to the schedule. The employers refused to discuss these demands, and made a coun-ter-proposal, which was a little more liberal than that made by them at the February conference, but the union men said they could not accept it, nor could they recommend their members to accept it. This was the position on Friday evening, but at the request of the federation representatives it was agreed that the result of the conference be withheld from publication until this morning. ' The following statement is made on behalf of the coal mine owners who were at the conference: —
