MR. BALFOUR IN NEW YORK A MAGNIFICENT RECEPTION. (Rec. May 13, 5.5 p.m.) Now York, May 11. The shrieking of whistles, fluttering of flags, and popular enthusiasm greeted Mr. A. J. Balfour (British Foreign Minister) on his arrival hero. "Rule Britannia" was played in the City Hall and the Park. Troops lined the streets, and Boy Scouts wero prominent. In answering the speeches of Mr. J. H. Choato (tho veteran United States diplomat and jurist) and tho Mayor (Mr. J. P. Mitchell), Mr. Balfour, speaking in tho City Hall, declared that America had entered the war without a taint of selfishness, sharing the burdens, as ho hoped she would share the triumphs. Mr. Balfour assured tho gathering that the welcome that had been accorded him exceeded anything ho had ever experienced in his life. General Joffre visited Washington's house at Newburg, from which Washington had directed a "battle against tho . British during tho revolutionary war. A gold medal was awarded to General Joffre in commemoration of his visit—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
