THE POLICE LIST SECOND-HAND DEALER FINED Mr h G. Iteid, S.M., presided at the Magistrates Court yesterday. A second-hand dealer nunicd A V Steward pleaded guilty to a charge of lailiiig to keep a proper register of purchases as required by the Act. Cliief Detective Uoddam pointed out the seriousness of second-hand dealers iailiii" to comply with- tho provisions of the Act. The registration of purchases was necessary, so that stolen property sold to second-hand dealers could ho traced. This was accused's first offence. The Magistrate fined him :10s., with costs 7s. Thomas O'lirien and Michael Downey, convicted of fighting in Manners Street, were each fined 10s., in default three days' imprisonment. For insobriety, l r red A. C. Kingan and Ernest 11. Maxcy were each fined 10s., or to serve 48 hours in gaol. Nine first offenders were convicted and discharged. Join' M'TJonald was convicted and <iischa'rged for drunkenness, and for using obscene language in Taranaki Street he was. Sued -ffls., ithe alternative being seven days' imprisonment! CHARGES O-F THEFT. Dorothy Maud Bushett, a young girl, pleaded guilty to the tnelt of certain apparel and a handbag, of the total value of S3 10s'. Mr. H. V. O'Leary, who appeared for accused, said that tho girl was to a slight extent mentally deficient. When she was 'living with her people at home her behaviour was all that could bo desired, but when she' went to domestic service she seemed incapable of resisting stealing such goods ■as took her fancy. Mr. O'Leary suggested that the girl should be returned to her mother •who was capable of looking utter her. The Magistrate, however, committed her' to the Salvation Army Heme for a period of six months. Daniel Leonard Bdwnrds was convicted of being drunk, and he was fined 205., in default seven days' imprisonment. A further charge of stealing JCS in money was Withdrawn because the complainant in the case declined to give evidence. . Michael M'Grath was sentenced to a month's imprisonment for stealing a watch and chain valued at £5, the property of Ellen Parker., John Arthur Jacksoii and Jas. Grogan were remanded until to-day on a clarge of theft of an overcoat of the value of £3, the property of Ivwin Mahafl'ey.
BY-LAW AND. OTHER GASES. For Sumlny trading, Harry Davis, Noil Blair 'Austin, and Grace Roache were each fined iffis;, y.-itii costs 75., in default seven i!iy«' imprisonment. A. fine of £3, in the alternative twentyone <lay 3' imprisonment, was imposed on John i'raser for usine obscene language in Frederick Street, and for a similar oitonce in Courtenay Place Daniel M'Laughlin was fined ids. and costs, Eric Norman M'Alinden, on two charges of breaking his prohibition ordor, was fined 205., with costs 75., in default seven days .on each charge. John de Lacoy Crawley, for ono similar offence, was similarly fined. Thomas Henry Callingham was fined 205., with 7s. costs, for driving his motorcar at an excessive speed in Thorndon Quay. Samuel Pearco, for driving his motorcar on the wrong side of the Hutt Road, was fined 10s., -with costs 7s. Fred. Field, for failing to havo the number on his motor-cycle clearly visible, was ordered to. pay costs 75., and Alfred Cecil Kellet, on a similar charge, was also ordered to pay 7s. costs. A. M. Florence, for driving his motorcar at an (excessive speed in Courtenay Place, was fined 205., with costs. For allowing; stock to wander, James Carson was fined 2s. Gd., with coats 7s. t FISH OFFAL. A carter, named David Mason, was charged with depositing fish offal and a box of fish 'heads on the boach at Island Bay. N The bvidence of the'police was to.tho elfeut that accused deposited a tag and a box of fish olfal in a boat lying on tho Island Bay beach. Mr. P. J. O'Regan, who appeared for the defence, called evidence to show that both the bag and the box contained only fish heads, and were not deposited on the beach, but merely left on the boat for an. hour or so. The, Magistrate dismissed the information. ■ \ SEAMEN IN COURT. Frederick C4eorge Stevens, a seaman on a deep-sea vessel, was charged that on Hay 7, at Auckland, he did-assault four officers of tho vessel, including the- captain. H« was charged also with disobeying tho lawful commands of the captain. I Mr. A. W. Blair appeared for the captain, a.uit Mr. H. F. O'Leary for the defendant. According to evidence the accused, who was intoxicated at the time, was ordered by tho captain to go aboard. Stevens refused, and resisted the captain's efforts to get him on board. ,Tho incident developed into a melee on the wharf, the defendant kicking and biting, and injuring four of tho officers. Evidence was called for the defence, but the two witnesses had not seen the beginning of the trouble. , Accused was convicted on both charges. For the assault he was fined 405., in the alternative fourteen days' imprisonment;, and for disobeying the commands of the captain, he was fined 205., or to serve three days in gaol. j WOULD "KNOCK HIS BLOCK OFF." The cook of a schooner proceeded I against a seaman, named Charles Eriekson, employed on the same vessel, for using insulting language, and applied that defendant be bound over in sureties to keep the peace. Mr. D. M. Findlay appeared for the cook,- a Creek named Apcstolo Alexander, and Mr. H. F. O'Leary for defendant. The complainant said that defendant came to. the galley ono morning and threatened to kill him, Mr. O'Leary, for the defendant, said ho ooiild not help suggesting that there was some ulterior motive in this action. The man was a stranger in Wellington, and j could not possibly find security. It was I a case of "shanghaing" the man. The incident was a simple affair. The defendant and his mates could not sleep because. of the noise made by the cook in the early morning. On the morning in question defendant got out of his bunk and went to the galley, and threntI ened tho cook to "knock his block off" i if lie did not make less noise. ! After hearing tho evidoni-e the Magis- ! trato said it was unusual to make such j an application in respect to a seaman ■ who was a stranger in the port. Ho i dismissed the application without preI judice. j ! j
