HIGH SCHOOL BOY'S LAPSE
. The Chief Justice, Sir llobprt Stout, sentenced two prisoners in tho Supreme Court yesterday.
Mr. P. S. K. Maeassey appeared for the Crown.
Anders Peter Sveuson, a Dannovirkc High School boy, had pleaded guilty in the Lower Court to two charges of breaking, entering, and theft at Da'nnovirke. t
Mr. O'Lcary, on beiialf of the prisoner, said that tho latter lta<l, up to tho time of tho offences, borne • au excellent character and shown great promise at school. Ho committed: the thefts while he was without parental control in Dannevirko. Tho explanation seemed to bo that during tho holidays tho lad had earned somo money and purchased somo clothes, but had not paid two of the debts ho incurred. He said nothing of the matter to his parents. Being pressed for payment, ho look the money.

You have an excellent character from tho beadmaster of your school and from other people in tho district, and it is very sad to seo a- young hoy liko you spoiling a. career. 1 shall not sentence you to imprisonment. You aro not seventeen years.of ago yet, and.l iutend to give you a- chance. . . . You will be ordered to com'o up for sentence when called upon, and for tho next eighteen months you will write a letter onco a month to the Probation Officer in Wellington tolling him how you are getting on.
