WAR RELIEF

THE WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the Executive of the "Wellington War Relief Association was held yesterday. Present: Messrs. L. 0. H. Tripp (chairman), A. R. Atkinson, J. Hutcheson, J. Lewis, C. M. Luke, D. M'Laren, James M'lntosh. X. Macintosh, S. Kirkcaldie, and C. A. Ewen.

A resolution, forwarded by the Wairarapa Patriotic Association, regarding the necessity of. tbe provision of improved land for returned soldiers, was received and referred to the Advisory Board.

A legal opinion was received from Mr. C. P. Skerrett regarding the ability of the association to make a arant towards tho maintenance of tbe Salvation Army's Institute for returned soldiers at'Rotorua. Mr: Skerrett stated that the association had not the power to spend its funds outside the Wellington district. Ho suggested that as the restriction had not been intended, the,rules should be amended.

It was decided that steps should be taken to effect an amendment of the rules accordingly, with the object of enabling tbe funds of the association to be used for "any suitable purpose connected with the. returned soldiers.

A discussion took place regarding the method cf nnvmsnt- of allowances. Itwas staged that tho present system of payment by cheque involved a beaw annual charge for stamp duty and postages. If pavments were made bv cash, the association would save some money.
