The fortnightly meeting of the Society 'for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals • was held on Tuesday. Mr. F. Meadowcroft presided. Miss Caroline Herford, who has just been elected to the Manchester City Council, is lecturer" and demonstrator in education at Manchester University, a member of the University Committee of the Workers' Education Association, and a staunch suffragist. Since the outbreak of the war she has found time to help to organise a Voluntary Aid Detachment among University women. Miss Herford, who was warmly welcomed by her colleagues, ;is tho third woman oity, councillor m Manchester.. Miss Ashton was .elected .in 1908, and Mrs., Eedford in 1910.
