FORTNIGHTLY -MEETING. ; '
The fortnightly meeting of the Society 'for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals • was held on Tuesday. Mr. F. Meadowcroft presided. The report on the subscriptions collected during the past fortnight showed that they totalled £9'7s:,"which "was made ,»up as follows:—Messrs. F. W. Renner, Robert Johnson, Brown, Neave, and Courtenay, Phillips and Pike, Mrs. Sidey, W. R. Bock, D. Milligan.'ss. each, £4; Messrs. B. Nimmo, B. C v Aston, G. Flux, M. Marks, Mesdames Evans and Baillie, and Friend, Miss; G. Mason, 2s. 6d. each, £1; Mr. G. MacMoran, 3s. 6d. A : resident of Island Bay wrote expressing the opinion that there should be an ambulance in Wellington for the conveyance of injured animals. His letter was "received." :; . ,
Miss Caroline Herford, who has just been elected to the Manchester City Council, is lecturer" and demonstrator in education at Manchester University, a member of the University Committee of the Workers' Education Association, and a staunch suffragist. Since the outbreak of the war she has found time to help to organise a Voluntary Aid Detachment among University women. Miss Herford, who was warmly welcomed by her colleagues, ;is tho third woman oity, councillor m Manchester.. Miss Ashton was .elected .in 1908, and Mrs., Eedford in 1910.
