They were compelled, unless they were prepared to face loss of profits, to pursue one of two courses • —to increase prices to consumers or effect economies. They, resolved to adopt the latter course, and to avoid as far as possible any increase in the ' cost of living. As a first method of ) effecting economy it was decided to close the shops at half-past 5 on four days outside of the Thursday half-holi-i- (lay, and at 8 o'clock on Saturday ]- nights. Then, owing to the difficulty '■ of getting suitable men for the doliv- \ ery carts and the cost of maintaining ',; horses and carts, it was decided in |J future to call upon families for orders only once a week, and to ask customers i- to mako their orders as complete as possible, so that inconvenience may be avoided and labour economised.
