HOTEL LICENSEE'S CASE
Mr. L. G. Reid, S.M., presided over a sitting of tho Magistrate's Court yesterday. Arthur 'league was charged with using obsceuo language. Ho pleaded guilty. According to the polico statement, 'league used tho language in an attack upon the woman with whom ho lived. Ho knocked her about, attempted to sot firo to her olothes, and gorierally treated her in a disgraceful fashion. "This is not a case for a fine," observed His Worship. "Defendant will bo sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment." ■ •
For insobriety, Annie Maud Sales, Peter M'Carron, and William M'Elwain were ; each fined 205., with tho alternative of spending a. week in gaol. Alexander M'Conochio was convicted of drunkenness and tho uso of obscene language. On tho latter chargo ho was fined 405., in default fourteen days. William Hughes, for like offences, was similarly dealt with. Norman Ellis, who had behaved in threatening fashion in Evans Bay Road, was fined 30s. Ho was given the option of serving a fortnight's imprisonment. Edward Bloomfield was convicted of being disorderly while drunk, and of damaging.a rail on a tramcar. On the first charge he was fined 205., and on the second was ordered to. pay 255., the value of the property damaged.
ALLEGATIONS AGAINST PUBLICAN
Albert Poland Durrant, licensse of the New Commercial Hot-el, appeared on two charges of exposing liquor for sale on Sunday, March 25. Tho police alleged that the'bar was open, at 10 a.m., and again at 6.5 p.m., on the date iu question. Mr. H. F. O'Leary, for tho defendant, said that on the first occasion tho bar. was opened at the request of four boarders, who alono were served with drinks.- On the second occasion it was opened to allow the head waitress to obtain the drinks ordered at dinner. The case was adjourned to allow His Worship to inspect the bar, aad see whether it opens upon a passage or a room. This, it was said, will be an important factor in settling the question whether the liquor was "exposed for sale" to persons who could not legally purchaso it. MAINTENANCE OASES.. Defendants in maintenance cases were dealt with as under: — •• •James Charles Findlay was ordered to pay £18 10s. by instalments of 10s. per week, in default one week's imprisonment. George Henry Bradley was ordered to pay £6 within a fortnight, in default a fortnight in gaol. , Robert Muirhead was ordered to pay £7 10s. by instalments of 10s. per-week. The alternative in this case also was fixed at 14 days' imprisonment.
