SENSATION IN ROME. Rome, May 6. A sensation was caused by the arrest of a pseudo count, an ex-army ofiicer'and journalist named Cortese, in connection with colossal frauds. Cortese amassed a fortune by selling war material to.ltaly during the Tnpolitan and present wars. He then started a gigantic theatrical trust and a combine of leading newspapers. He surrounded himself with the leading Italian nobility, and with the assistance of two individuals, represented to be prominent Piedmontese capitalists, he secured by means of forgeries vast credits from financial houses. Commendafore Ma'nfredini, head director of the Bank of Borne, has been arrested as an accomplice; also Cortese s legal adviser. Cortese's personal debts exceed a quarter of a million sterling — Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
