BOWLERS V. NON-BOWLERS

Tho chess niatch, Bowlers v. NonBowlers, whioh has extended over tho past fortnight, was concluded on Saturday evening at tho Wellington Chess Club's rooms in tho Y.M.C.A. building. The- final tally is: Non-Bowlors IS, Bowlers 13. Tho Bowlers .throw, away advantages at lour different boards, losing two games that they should have won, and losing half a point in two other games. But for thoso mishaps they would havo been returned winners by a margin of one game. The Bowlers were minus the services of Messrs. Salok, Carman, Watchman, 8,. I'\ Smith, Frost, llawnsiey, and Hadtickl, but had the assistance of Mr. Connell, the Wairnrapa champion, and of Mr. Clutten an exNelson representative playor. ' Mr. Guest, a visitor from tho Chatham Islands, played for the non-bowlers. The following is the full scoro of this very successful match; a happy feature of which was the almost entire absence of one-sided games. Bowlers.—Barnes, 0; Still, 0; J. A. ' WELLINGTON SOUTH CLUB. The twelfth annual general meeting of the above club was beid on Thursday evening in the Newtown Public Library. Mr. Armstrong (president) occupied the chair, and thoro was a largo attendance of members. The report presented by the hon. secretary, Mr. Pcrrott, showed that tho club had had a vory successful year. The four matches played had all been won comfortably, tbo club having defeated the Working Mon's Club by 8 games to 5, and tho Masterton Club (in a telegraphic match) by 7 to 4, hoßidcs easily winning both the "home and home" fixtures with tho Ngaio 0.0. Tho nnluial handicap tourney had been won by Mr. Purchas, Messrs. Borry «nd Clark, tho runners up, each being ono. point behind; and Mossrs. Douglas and

lerrott each 2 points behind. The club championship for 1917 has just been won by Mr. G. P. Anderson with a tally of 6 wins and 1 loss. He made a fine "lato run," scoring his last four wins in less than a week. The runners up are Messrs. Purchas (last year s champion), Welton and A. Clark, each of whom lost two gamos. The death of Mr. A. G. Fell, president of the N.Z. Chess Association, is recorded with much regret. A letter of condolence has been sent to Mr. T. Bland, one of the club's most esteemed members, whose eldest son made the supremo sacrifice for his King and country "somewhere in France." The report bliowb that there are eighteen active and four honorary members. Thanks aro recorded to Messrs.' Armstrong, Berry, Kelling, and Perrott for assistance of various kinds, and to the local newspapers for the excellent reports that they have given of the club's doings from time to time. The balance-sheet shows the club's effects to bo worth £17. There-are no liabilities, and the cash in hand amounts to £,6 16s. 9d. The roport and halance-sheet were unanimously adapted on the motion of the president, who congratulated the club on its very satisfactory position, due, very -largely, to the energy and enthusiasm'of their hon. secretary, Mr. Perrott. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr. Armstrong (re-elected); vice-presidonts, Doctors Bowerbank, Kemp, and Line, Rev. D. H. Jenkins, and Messrs. B; B. Allen and Kelling; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr. W. B. P. Perrott (reelected) ; committee, Messrs. Weine, Berry, Douglas, Clark, and Purchas; auditor, G. H. Loney (re-elected); delegate to N.Z. Chess Association, Mr. Purchas. Three now members were elected, viz., Mossrs. W. Eno, A. T. Carter, and J. Thomaß. Mr. Harper offered a special prizefor the sealed handicap event that is to be run in conjunction with the annual tourney. Those who make a bad start will therefore have an incentive to play their hardest right up to the last round. A letter was road from the Masterton Cluh regarding the inter-club fixture for 1917. ' It is probable that the Wellington South Club will be able to send a strong team to Masterton on the Saturday before Labour Day to ropay the visit made by the Wairarapa players in July. 1914. During the evening Mr. Anderson,-who was a leading player in Bristol before coming to New Zealand, received a number of congratulations on winning the club championship.
