COMMONWEALTH STEAMERS. Although control of some Australian vessels has already nominally passed from the Navy Department to 1-ho Prime Minister's Department, effect v.-iii not be given to that transfer until the end of tho financial year. Meamvliilo although the Shipping Board, of wjiioh the Prime Minister [Mr. Hughes) is chairman, and llcar-Admiral Clar&ron is vice-chairman, lias ample power*, its functions have not yet been fully exercised, consequently tho system adopted by tho Na.vy Department still prevails. On tho other hand, there aro tho Commonwealth-owned steamers, which are under tho direct control of tho Prime Minister's , Department, acting as omenta in Australia for tho manager of tho lino in London (Mr. H. B. Larliin). So satisfactory havo already been the operations of the Commonwealth Lino, that by tho end of la*t month, profits had been realised to the orient of f-WO.CCO. As the total oosfc of the steamers was in 'Ilia neighbourhood of two million pounds, there will appear every likelihood of jl being extinguished in another year or so.—Exchange.'

''Fa-irplay" states that Sir Alfred Yarrow is offering a reward of £20 tin to a. total expenditure of £10,KO to anyone on board a commercial ves=ol who fir~t. draws the captain'a attention to nn enemy submarine' in tho vicinity.
