, / In reply to a request from tlie Advisory Board of New Zealand Patriotic , ,War Relief Societies, Mr. A. P. All- • port, of Nelson, lias forwarded the following -report; on fruit farming for returned soldiers: "To my mind there is no class of farming in JNew Zealand that should be so attractive to the returned soldiers as that of fruit-growing, as it is a dean, healthy, and interesting occupation, and is highly remunerative, especially when conducted un- • der up-to-date methods.. You are no doubt, aware that in the Nelson district the fruit-growing industry has developed to a remarkable degree, and the greater part of the development has taken placo on what would be , called (from a grazing point of view) very poor country, but this land is liighly suitable for the production of . the very best export apples,. being of ' magnificent colour and firm texture, and good keeping quality, the subsoil being of a free sandy clay nature, thus enabling the tree to make a very deep root, and enabling the tree to stand the dry season very well. .Now tin's class of land has one drawback, from the fact that when planting an orchard you must wait some five years before it 'comes into bearing, and the land cannot be used to any extent in the meantime by growing such crop's as potatoes, tomatoes, etc., to keep the pot boiling, therefore, if a man takes up this class of land he must have some other moans ot support for the first five or six years; after that, of course,' it is a good profitable proposition. This .difficulty could be got over by running the fruit farm in conjunction with a fair-sized block of land which is al-,-ready planted."
