MAY DAY IN THE WAR ZONE
SENSATIONAL RUMOURS Amsterdam, May 2. Details of May Day demonstrations in Germany axe scanty. Berlin admits there were a few strikes, but the majority of the workmen did not stop work. There are sensational rumours regarding labour troubles at Cologne. Rioting resulted in heavy casualties. Tho severity of tho censorship prevents confirmation of the rumours. The "Vorwaerts" issued a significant warning against impatience, and implores the people to be calm. Tho newspaper believes tbat 99 per cent, of the soldiers would become pacifists after the war. Vienna reports that orderly strikes are general in Austria and Hungary. The people are demanding peace without annexations and humiliation. Geneva," May 2. i 'A' huge Socialist demonstration at Zurich was without incident. Stockholm, May 2. Herr Brantinc and other leading Socialists beaded the greatest demonstration ever known in Scandinavia. Speeches wero made and banners inscribed, demanding more food and better conditions: Therewero no disturbances. There were similar demonstrations elscwbore in Sweden. —Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn.
