Professor Preuss, Director of the German New Guinea Company, writing to the "Hamburger Nachrichten." contends that Gennauy must) re-estab-lish herself in tho Pacific as a last opportunity of preventing a. settlement of. Japanese, American, and British— Australian—interests. "It •would be an unforgivable mistake to abandon tho South Sea colonies and withdraw from tho Pacific so long as Japan and America , aro hostile, and Australia sees in Japan a dangerous competitor and opponent. Germany, has no occasion to budge from the Pacific. Tho disappearance of the German Hag from New Guinea and tho Pacific isles would mean an irreparable loss of prestige throughout the East. BRITISH WOUNDED RECEIVE KINDNESS FROM GERMANS.

Mr. Beach Thomas writes: "A section of the Britisli troops captured a Hun basement fortress, thirty feet deop, under the second German line, and impervious to shell-fire. It contained thirty-one British wounded, who had been provided with cc;fl by the retreating enemy.
