THE TURF

NOTES AND COMMENTS

IBx GLSHCOE.I

A final reminder is given that acceptances for tho ilawora meeting close tonight. Entries for all ovents at tho Otaki June meeting close on. Monday next, ut 8.30 p.m. Horse owners were delighted to read yesterday that the Kailway Department has removed the rcstriotion on the carriage of goods, and it is now thought that very little timo "will elapse before tho Department is able to carry racehorses. This irill ensure the success of the coming Manawatu fixture. Bon Pieve is engaged in both the Hurdles and Cup at Hastings to-morrow, but the dual Derby winner will most likely tako hia placo in the jumping event, in which, lie reads nicely with lOst. 121b. The Karamu stable has withdrawn ITylaus from the Hack Hurdles at Hastings, and will now bo without a representative in the race. Probably tho Hyiuet.tus griding is being reserved for more important events ahead. Oopsus is p. prominent defection from tho Porangahav. Handicap at Hastings. Tho reason of tlie withdrawal of Desort Gold's half-brother is not known, but it is hardly on account of the weight received. -,an<l maybe lie did not do toff well after his trip south. It is noticeable that Mr. T. H. Lowry lias nothing engaged at the Hawke's Bay Jockey duo's meeting.- His horses have been located at Woodrille for some months past, and tho difficulty of getting them to Hastings probably accounts for their absence. The absence of Estland from the Hawke's Bay Stakes, to be run on Saturday, is to be regretted, and will detract from Hie interest in that event. The Karnmu oolt Hrmestra may be favourite for the race. Considering" t!ie transport difficulties the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club lias received excollent acceptances for its autumn, meeting, which takes place tomorrow and Saturday. Good fields are engaged in all the events, and despite tho absence of visiting horses the gathering promises to be as successful as in former years. Chortle is. now as well as ever he was, and provided the weather holds good the Multifid gelding will, despite his big weight, run a good race in the Hawke's Bay Cup to-morrow. His moat dangerous opponent promised to be Sasauof, but the Melbourne Cup -winner may not be seen quite at his best after the trying boat journey and tho walk to Hastings. Prior to leaving Trentham Sasanof galloped really well, and those who witnessed his effort were quite prepared to see liim give a good account of himself in tomorrow's race. The hurdle races at Hastings should not be hard to win, as the majority of the runners in both events are Tery backward, and irill be seoa to more advantage in a month's time.
