NAVY ".HEAD MONEY"
TSINGTAO CLAIM DISALLOWED. London, April 30.
The Prize Court has disallowed tho naval claim for "head-money".in respect of the German vessels sunk at Tsingtao, on the ground that the capture was the.result of a, joint operation by land and naval forces, and that therefore the bounty was not pay-able.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. .
["Head-money" is claimed in respect of enemy warships destroyed in action, at tho rato of £5 for each member of the enemy, ship's company, and the money becomes the property of, the British Fleet. In the present case, the claim was for £6000, and was made by Commanders Fitzmaurice and Maxwell. At the capture of Tsingtao,.after the bombardment, it was found that seven German warships had been sunk. Commanders Fitzmaurice and Maxwell's vessels, the Triumph and the TJsk, wore the only British representatives with tho Japanese Fleet. It was impossible to say whether a ship was sunk by gunfire or scuttled. Commander Fitzmaurice gave evidence that he was unable to give particulars, as his papers were lost when tho Triumph was sunk off Gallipoli in 1915.1
