POLICE CASES.
Mr. L. G. Rejd, S.M., occupied tho Bonoli at the Magistrate's' Court yesterday. Erasmus Paisley Robertson, for whom. Mr. H.' I<\ O'Leary appeared, pleaded guilty to tho theft of.one bottlo of wine, of the value of 10s., the property of the Shaw, and Albion Company. Chief-Detective Boddam, who prosecuted,, stated that accused was working in tho hold of;a vessel with a number of other men; and on leaving tho vessel ho was seen' carrying tho bottlo of wine, which was immediately taken from him, and tho man arrested. Mr.'H. F. O'Leary. on behalf of defendant, 'said that this was not a ease, of cargo broaching. Tho' bottlo of wine had been lying on tho deck of tlie vessel, evidently broached by somebody 'else, and tho accused picked it up when leaving the vessel.; It was a very difficult matter to convince' the man that ho had committed theft. Tho Magistrate imposed a fino of 405., default being fixed at fourteen days' 1m prisonment. ' •
Honry Alexander Saunders -Was con•icted and discharged of being 'found Irunk, and was fined 205., in ; tho alernativo to undergo soven days' lm)risonment, for committing a grossly ndecsnt act in. Frederick Street. For insobrioty Mary Ihiffy was fined os., in default three days in gaol, and Mward Bloomfiold was similarly ponilised.- Angus Maokay was fined 205., tttd a prohibition order issued against lim. John Marshall Savidg'o, who was pund "helplessly drunk m Rintoul Jtroefc, was ordered to pay ■ expenses, md a prohibition order was issued (gainst him. Five first offenders wore xmvicted and discharged. , John William Ross, represented by Mr. P."VV. Jackson, and Archie Ernest Cheal were charged with using threatening behaviour- in Vivian. Sheet, and on the application of 'Mr. P. W. Jackson a romnnd to'.Thursday was granted. Edward Hayes, for whom Mr. H. J*. O'Leary appeared, was, charged with assaulting John Edward May. Mr. O'Lcary explained that accused received a great doal of provocation, and being a quick-tempered man ho retaliated. Hayes was convicted and discharged. ~ , Arthur William Scoullar, who was in arrears with maintenanco payraonts to the amount of £16 2s. 10d., was ordered to pay £8 forthwith- and £1 a month thereafter. Tanner, Henry Herbert Andrews, Mrv:K Campbell, Bernard M'Kenna, Thomas Henry Price, and John James Thomas. Thomas Hodges was sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended provided defendant pays arrears. Jane Rowlands, for whom Mr. 1. W • Jackson appeared, was ■ a separation' order from her husband, John Elias Rowlands.
