WHARFS DREDGE. Speaking at the last meetiug of the Timaru Harbour Board, the chairman said that Dredge No. 350 had returnod from Port Chalmers, whore ehe had been overhauled, and was not laid up. The cost of the overhaul this year, £2100, was within the estimate, which was a matter for satisfaction. There were- convincing and cogent, reasons for the unpleasant step of laying up the dredge, which the hoard had had to take. In the first place, the dredge , was not' required at work, now, as there was a sufficient depth of water in tho channel, and the soundings allowed that there was no silting up. In the second placo, they were led to lay np the dredge on the ground of expense. Their revenue had deoreased by moro than £5000. and they could not, ltecp the dredgo at work without increasing {the rate or the shipping charges. Seeing that auy such increase would be to carry out an unnecessary work, the board would not have been justified in imposing additional charges.
