An arrangement was then made under which the republic agreed to pay up. Mobilised, the army of the republic numbers 85,535 officers and men. The reserve army consists of 40,575 men, in 81 battalions. The basis of service is conscription. The rupture with Germany will probably be more annoying to the German concessionaries and other business interests there than to von Hindenburg.] (Rec.
