ANOTHER BIG BRITISH ATTACK
ADVANCE ON SEVERAL MILES OF FRONT fiOOP PROGRESS NORTH OF THE SCARPE ' THE-SUBMARINE . MENACE ;■-. HOW MR. LLOYD GEORGE WE FIGHT It AUSTRALIAN TRANSPORT TORPEDOED 'After a lull in.the terrific Battle of the Scarps, the -British ; line' has' again been thrown fdrward'on a-front of several miles, northward of the Scarpe. ' A despe rate struggle is in progress, and at the latest accounts the Germans are -being subjected to a terrible ordeal. The British are making satisfactory progress, and the enemy, madly counter-attacking in his effort to stay our advance, is ; suffering heavy losses under the fir e of oilr artillery. An artillery duel is in progress in Champagne. During the operations which com- ; menoed on April 16, 'the French have captured an enormous -■ quantity of armament —heavy guns, field guns, maxime, trench mor- . _tars—and over, twenty, thousand prisoners. The enemy, by reason of the events in the West, has been unable, to deliver his carefullyprepared blow on. the Italian front, and is now anxiously awaiting the beginning of the Italian oftensivej which, it is said, will, be on a scale calculated to exert a powerful influence upon the situation in the Near East. Mr. Llojd George, the British Prime Minister, has seized the moment when the public's thoughts were engrossed by the recent jump in the weekly average of.vessels eunk by submarines to address a ringing speech to the nation. In the course of his speech he declares his confidence in the ability of the country to defy the shoot-a-t-sight policy exploited by the U-boats.
