MERCHANT SKRVIOB GUILD. The annual mcetine of the Merchant Service Guild is to be held on Monday morning next at the guild rooms, Fcather6ton Street. THE WANGANUI DBEDGE. A letter this received from Messrs. Fleming and Hoss at the last meeting of the Wanganui Harbour Board in regard to the now dredco Kaiono. .• which is being built at Home, says a/Wanganui exchange. The letter confirmed' a previous cablegram rcfttsinß an offer of £3000 extra made by the board to send the dredse out. The firm BUffPtested that it -would be' entitled to peouniary consideration as the result of dearer prices of building material, due to the war. Finally the contractors stated that it would bo impossible'to estimate the cost of deliverlnc the dredge, but If delivery irere insisted 110011, they woulci act promptly, nnd charse tho board with an at present unknown quantity, i.e., the actual cost The contractors also stated that a dredge had been completed by their firm for the -Liverpool Port Authority, and in which case an Admiralty ralo applied, the builders boinß euarantoed the extra cost. The. chairman said ho had interviewed Jtr. Swann (tho Harbour Boards engineer) who had said that practically all the material for the Kaione had been ordered, before the war started. This state of affairs wns quite different to buildine a dredge after , tho war had commenced. Personally the chairman did not think tho builders had any lcua.l. claim against the board. The builders, in the cvont of scndinß the dredge out, wanted the board to pay tho insurances, increased chareos, and also to relieve them of ft responsibility of replacing her... The chairman did not think it wise for tho board to agree to tho terras.
